How we work

Back to making things by hand

In a market full of furniture that is mass produced and forgotten in two years, we still work the way it used to be done: with time, with craft, with our hands. Every piece that leaves El Taller was made by someone who knows what they are doing and who put their heart into it. That cannot be manufactured at scale.

Our commitment

I.

Deadlines we keep

We give you a date and we hold it. If anything shifts, you hear it from us, early.

II.

Guidance from start to finish

We walk you through materials, measurements and finishes so you decide with information, not in the dark.

III.

Punctuality

We show up when we said we would, for the site visit and for the installation. Your time is part of the project.

IV.

Quality and detail

We are obsessive about what almost nobody sees: the edges, the joints, the inside of a drawer, the way a door sits.

V.

A process worth enjoying

Commissioning custom furniture should be something you enjoy, not one more item on your list. That is the difference.

The team

More than 20 years of craft

Behind El Taller is a team with more than twenty years building furniture, structures and interiors, and solving millwork for homes, offices and businesses. We do not subcontract the part that matters: we design it, we build it and we install it ourselves.

Materials and trades

We don't sell a material. We recommend the right one.

Every material has its place. One handles humidity better, another takes lacquer better, another gives you more square metre for your money. Before we quote, we explain which one suits your space, your use and your budget, with the upsides and the downsides of each.

Woods and boards

Macro shot of the grain on a solid wood board

Solid wood

The noble option. It can be sanded, restored and passed down. We work regional woods and fine woods depending on the project.

Ideal para: Tables, headboards, doors, signature pieces.

Macro shot of a plywood edge showing its layers

Plywood

Structurally the most stable of the boards. It handles the humidity of the peninsula better and does not warp over time.

Ideal para: Kitchens, closets, bathroom cabinetry, built ins.

Macro shot of an edge glued solid wood panel

Edge glued panel

Solid wood strips joined into a panel. It gives you the look and feel of solid timber with more stability and a better price.

Ideal para: Countertops, shelves, desks, tables.

Macro shot of a matte lacquered MDF door

MDF

A perfectly smooth surface with uniform density. It is the best base for lacquer and for fine routed detail.

Ideal para: Lacquered kitchen doors, panels, colour furniture.

Macro shot of laminate samples with a wood texture

Laminate

Resistant to hard use, constant cleaning and scratches. A huge catalogue of colours, textures and wood finishes.

Ideal para: Commercial, offices, high use kitchens.

Under one roof

Not just carpentry

In house metalwork and upholstery. Mixed pieces are solved by one team, in one workshop, on one timeline.

Blacksmith welding a black steel base in the workshop

Metalwork

Bases, structures, legs, frames, screens, stairs and any mixed wood and metal piece. Powder coat, matte black, brass and natural steel finishes.

Hands upholstering a bench in natural linen

Upholstery

Banquettes, chairs, headboards, backrests and cushions. High traffic fabrics for commercial work, textiles and leathers for the home.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Just as well, only the start changes. We take measurements with you over a video call using a guide we send, or we coordinate with your architect. You approve the design, we build, and we schedule delivery. Within the peninsula we install ourselves.

It depends on the use, the humidity of the space and the budget. For kitchens and bathrooms we usually recommend plywood for stability; for lacquered doors, MDF for its surface; for tables and headboards, solid wood or edge glued panel. We explain it at the site visit with physical samples in hand.

All three, in the same workshop. That lets us deliver mixed wood and metal pieces, upholstered benches and complete projects without you having to coordinate anyone else.

It depends on the scope. A single piece usually takes two to four weeks; a kitchen or a full project, six to ten. The date is given to you in writing in the quote.

With a photo or the measurements of the space we give you a range the same day. To fix the price we do a site visit and take exact measurements.

Yes. We build from plans and specifications, and we provide cut lists and material samples when the project calls for it.

It depends on the size of the project, but as a general rule, 50% to start fabrication and the balance against delivery and completed installation.

Yes, with our own team. Installation is included in the quote and it is not subcontracted.

We measure, transport and install across the Yucatán Peninsula and the Riviera Maya: Mérida, Progreso, Valladolid, Campeche, Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar and around. For the rest of the country we build, crate and ship with specialised freight, with assembly drawings and remote support. Tell us where you are and we will tell you exactly how we handle it.
